I have noticed more then once that when I see railfans taking photos of us that when I slide the window back and wave the cameras come back down from the face Ifyou dont want me to wave just say so I am just being friendly Larry
I think it’s great when a crew member waves to me, especially when they go to the trouble of opening the window to do it. It’s kinda hard to see the crew with the windows closed these days with the tinting. Keep on waving, Larry!

Last summer the wife and I were railfanning at Cresson, PA where there is a really nice observation deck. There was a young lady with 2 little boys, the youngest about four. When one Norfolk Southern intermodal was passing, the engineer waved. That little boy got so excited because the train said hello to him. It not only made his day, but seeing his joy also made mine. Thanks guys, sometimes it means more than you think.

Count me in with the guys that are very happy when the crew waves back. Fortunately for me, that happens more times than not. I can understand it if the crew is too busy to wave, and it doesn’t bother me. But I’ll admit to enjoying it when they do.

I have to admit that I thought some of the posts would a bit negetive but to say the least i am both surprised and delighted at the response to this post Thanks Guys It always thrills me to wave especially at the younger kids it is a a real perk of the job be safe Larry
I don’t mind
If I am on the ground somewhere near the ROW, and I see that a crew member is looking toward me, I will wave in part to indicate that I am aware of the train and not planning to test my superman skills on the locomotive.
A friendly wave is always nice, but I am not offended when I don’t get a wave back. No big deal, just the way things are.
Yeah go Ahead and keep waving. I think it’s really cool to see an engineer waving as they go though a crossing and when ever I see one waving. I"ll wave back and I’ll even do the sign to blow there horn on a count that is not a quite zone. I do remember 2 summers ago when the Milwaukee Road 261 was in town when he went though the quite zone on Waterford Ave. He laid on his horn and everyone standing at that crossing waved right back at him. One other time I was sitting by the airport and as a plane was getting ready for take off. The pilot opened his window and waved to everyone watching the planes take off it was a really cool thing to see something like that.

When a crew responds it it gives the whole setting something more majestic than just admiring trains, whether it be a wave, or a honk or some combination of the 2.
