Soffit railway

Sometimes we can gleen ideas from folks using other scales. I thought I’d include a spacesaving idea from someone on another forum. The idea (in link below) could actually be extended, by making a hole in the wall and extending the soffit idea in an adjacent room, or throughout the house, for that matter. Another modification to the idea would be to build the soffit at eye level as an alternative to around the wall shelf. Modifications to the idea are only as limited as the imagination of the designer…

Very nice! My wife and I were looking at homes this past weekend and a few of the homes we are considering building come with tray ceilings in the master bedroom. I asked the builder if they could open the tray and box it in a form of ‘C’… he looks at me and says, ‘Now why would you want to do that?’ I said, 'Well you see you could run an O Gauge railroad inside the ‘C’ '. His response, ‘That is a cool idea.’ Wife didn’t say anything other than, ‘Don’t even think about it, you already get most of the basement for that.’

I gave her a hug and told her I was kidding… fingers crossed behind back! LOL!

FJ&G,

I ran mine at the height of the bookshelf and cupboards it crosses. It’s about 32" or so off the floor. It goes through the walls and out a stairway at the riser height. Where it crosses a doorway I have a drop down bridge. It works and looks great in our finished family room.

Tom

Looks pretty cool!

This is my favorite part of Tom’s layout where it comes out from under the stairs.

Of course the cat, suddenly awakened by the blast of the horn exits first, then the train.

The train through the stairs is NUTS!!! I love it!!!

My wife’s cat wouldn’t fit through that little hole!
