I don’t claim to be an expert, but I don’t remember ever seeing roof mounted destination boards like those on that center entrance car before. Were they unique to a Boston line?

The WATERTOWN sign is a roll sign in a sign box, operated by a crank above the motorman’s head. Unlike some other roll sign boxes, Boston’s had to be threaded over an extra set of rollers to keep the roll next to the glass. The boxes were also found on type 2s, 3s and 4s. Some older Boston cars did have sockets for roof mounted destination boards.

Many, if not all, of Baltimore’s Brill Semi-Convertables also had roof end destinatin signs:
