Dayton/Hamilton and maybe Cincy…no one wants to handle dirty cash
Probably has more to do with social distancing.
Charlotte Transit light rail and buses going free fare tomorrow.
As a regular transit user, I cannot think of any system in the U.S. where the operators handle cash.
If a rider in Texas is paying with cash, h/she slides the bills and coins into the fare box. The driver never touches them.
If the rider buys a day pass or an extended ticket, which works for transfers, the driver may hand it to h/her, but the driver does not give the rider any change.
If a person in Dallas is buying a monthly pass at the downtown Dallas Area Rapid Tansit Center, the clerks would handle cash. The same is true for Austin, El Paso, Houston, and San Antonio.
“free fare” in Toledo means that the passengers get on the back door of the bus and limit contact with the driver and the farebox in the front of trhe bus. only 10 people per bus allowed with a overflow bus following.
It’s becoming the new norm already after covid 19. Even in my area, most shops and restaurant are going cash free. As much as it troubles people, I feel like it’s the right move as it helps reduce the risk of transmitting the virus.
