These engines were initially made from 6 mallets (0-6-6-0) that CPR had built for use in the Rockies, needless to say the mallets did not work out well.

The decopods on the other hand were not only helpers for the big hill, but ofter were used for passenger and freight trains on their own. These engines lived their lives in the Rockies.
