Back in 1984 I had a job that included a good deal of travel. Although I was often in towns too quickly to really railfan, I would try and capture some commuter trains whenever I could. The first shot is the F40 line-up at Boston’s South Station in May of 1984.

The yard throat with the old sempahore bridge.

Moving on to Chicago, in July of 1984, an F40 pushes across Canal Street, meaning it is now on Chicago Union Station trackage.

And finally, Atlanta in January of 1984, the MARTA train over the Seaboard System Yard.

Thanks for looking. Corrections are welcome.

The last is my favorite. The yard was turned into an intermodal facility sometime after the photo was taken. I’ve been through there many times on pig trains and to and from Tilford Yard. Very cool photo thanks for posting. If you have anymore photos from the Atlanta area or any in Georgia post em up. Thanks again.
Ahhh… 1984. I was still in high school out in California at the time. I forgot that MBTA once owned F40s, and the stretched F40 knockoff made by MK, I think.
At the time that you took the photos, were any of the T’s F10 cab units still pulling commuter trains, or had they been replaced by the MK F40’s?
I like the picture of the Metra commuter train. Good thing the locomotive is pushing rather than pulling the train, otherwise that fellow in the white shirt would have been plastered on the front of the locomotive! [:O] [;)]
Cris_261: MBTA still runs F40, plus the MK rebuilds and GP40-2MCs, as well as a few other Geeps in MOW service. The first three I mentioned are the only ones in passenger service.
Thanks for the kind words… I’ll have to see what else I have. Going through these old pictures is sort of like going out on the original expiditions again. Discoveries all over the place.
