Some Southern California Oddities

Took these images yesterday of some oddities, and thought I would share with the group. This Air Force 80-tonner appears to be OOS. There are always trucks parked here, and no available shot. Lucked out that the lot was clear yesterday.

Then, the former Kaiser Fontana SW1500s are now working for a consortium called California Steel Industries.

Finally, other places have street running… in LA we have freeway running.

The GE looks like it was shoved too hard into the dirt pile, the wheels are off the rail. Thanks for the photos.

This track down the middle of the freeway is a great idea ! I wonder how come it hasnt taken off everywhere else? Like Texas for instance…Great pic guy

Because it’s not so great when it comes time to maintain the track and signals, recrew a train, clean up a derailment, or add capacity.

And you think the crew that got it there did not shove blind?

When they built the 210 freeway, Santa Fe and the Pasadena Sub were basically told by Caltrans that this is how it was gonna be. It was the territory next to mine as a roadmaster, but I spent plenty of time in there because I was closer to it than the San Bernardino roadmaster. (Used to go into hysterics every time we had a rail grinder working in there an the traffic copters would report the railroad dragging flaming boxcars along there [(-D])

AAAHHHHH! UFO invasion!!! [(-D]

I may be getting my SoCal freeways mixed up, but I think the 10 freeway has a stretch of railroad tracks running down the middle when you get closer to Los Angeles. Seems to me that the tracks may have belonged to the SP, as I recall one night in the early 1990s seeing a train led by four or more SP engines pulling a stack train bound for Long Beach or thereabouts.

Nice pictures of the former Rock Island switcher and the former Air Force 80 tonner. Looks as though both switchers need some repair work!

Passenger train reminds me of the ones they got up in Toronto Canadia

Thanks – your recollection is spot on, and that’s exactly where the picture of the train in the middle of the freeway was taken… on the 10 (aka The San Bernardino). There’s very little freight on it now, I think just the GEMCO Hauler from West Colton to Van Nuys (which runs at night).

Same exact design, and in the case of the older F59PHs, same engines, as those used by GO Transit in Tornoto.
