Some times these forums SU**

This evening I have been trying to get on these forums for about 30 min. and all I can get is ‘‘No Longer Exist’’ If I had a busisness that I closed the doors whenever I wanted for as long as I wanted, how long would I be in busisness?

This is like a radio station that will go off the air at no warning and stay off until ‘‘we are ready’’ I will NOT tune into that station, I will find another one.

Looks like the adminastrators would see this. I overlooked this when the forums changed, but looks like they would have things more under control by now.

It is no wonder the forums are dying. Am I the only one that feel this way? If so, I will bow out quietly. Just Venting Mike

No I can relate

Sometimes it’s sad when i can’t access a site but being a non computer person I’m never sure

what the cause really is

The site It’s self ?

a server somewhere ?

Sun Spots ?

Kinda like where do lost e-mails go ?

I too couldn’t get on for some time - so I cruised the net for a while untill I could. I guess they needed some maintenance, but they could have put a “temporary off for repair” or some other tag there - or done the maintenance at 1am on a weekday when not too many RR’s are trying to get on[censored][V]

Before you get too hasty bananas there Mike, be aware you can never be sure where the problem is. It could be on your end, on their end or anywhere in the middle You do not have a direct connection. There are several companies involved between you and them.

I concur, Mike. This site has been experiencing increasing problems the past several days and it’s particularly bad tonight. Took a long time to log on and then attempts to post were very iffy, reply box cutting on and off, juggling word structure around, etc. Almost gave up attempting to post a weekend photo contribution. I’ve had no problems elsewhere on the Net.

This forum frequently hangs up and I must stop the page from loading and select the link again. Then the link opens almost immediately. I don’t have this problem with other forums I am using simultaneously. I suspect the server running this forum has problems or is overloaded.

Sounds to me like a server problem.

But it also might be, to much activity on the site. It’s popular and could be crashing under heavy use.

Perhaps they did not anticipate the heavier traffic, It is the holidays and more people are visiting.

Sporty

Those of us who remember the old forum software will recall much slower loading times, most of the time, but particularly during the day. I’d have to say that overall performance has improved.

Also, we remember the old days of trolls. They would come out from under their bridges on Friday night, create an account and wreak havoc until they were thrown off Monday morning. The could do this, of course, because the good folks who bring us these forums have lives and families, too. The offices shut down, like many others. So, now it’s Saturday, and the system had some serious trouble for a while. It might have been a power failure at the hosting site, or maybe the computer just crashed. Chances are, somebody was on call and had to drive to work on a cold Milwaukee night to get things back up and running again.

Thanks, whoever you are. I’ve been on call, and I’ve had to get up at 3 AM, drive a half-hour to work, push one button and drive home again. Well, somebody had to do it.

Don’t be too hasty to blame the site itself. There can sometimes be a lot of hops between you and the site you are attempting to access.

I lost access to the Atlas forum recently for over eight days, kept getting the “Page Cannot Be Displayed”. Finally came to find that my server did a band-width upgrade and for some reason, a glitch occurred that wouldn’t allow us to access ANY web-site whose address began with “69” as does Atlas’ site and numerous aspects of Yahoo.

I spent the first two days trying to find something wrong with MY computer, then blamed Atlas until I found others outside my area had no problem which ultimately lead me to contact my local server who was unaware of the problem.

Curious about how many “hops” your browser takes to get to your favorite site ? On your computer, go to start and run - type in “tracert xxxx” where xxxx is the site address ( www.trains.com ). The screen will display all the hops … you’d be surprised how many there’ll be.

For all the potential opportunities for glitches, I’m always amazed everything works as well as it does with some reasonable consistency !!!

Mark.

Learn some manners, people!

If you’re having a few problems, a polite query post to find out if others are too might be in order. If you think there is a site problem of soee sort, a polite message to the moderators is probably the thing. But posting a rude rant because you can’t log on to a forum for which you don’t even pay seems a little over the top to me. You should be glad you don’t get toosed out on your virtual ear. I appreciate the fact that this forum even exists. I’m certainly not going to start whining when it goes down for awhile.

Just my opinion.

YOU EXPECT a lot for FREE, Mike.

Some times these forums SURF?

Thats EXACTLY what I was going to say but had decided to stay out of ANOTHER whining thread, however, ty and [#ditto]

Nothing else to do 'cept wait 30 minutes gazing into a PC screen? Start modeling?

LOL now this is kinda funny. Just read this thread, then read Brakie’s comments about free time here. Odd that there are two extremes so close to each other. I think the OP might be the example of what Brakie was talking about LOL.

On the techincal side of the house, isn’t the human response to equipment failures interesting? If the server is up 24/7/365 for 3 years straight, no one notices or says a thing. The first second anything goes wrong, its “Get the torches and pitch forks!”

I can’t vouch for anyone else, but I KNOW we don’t live in a perfect world and take simple issues like this as a grain of salt.
