Some Trains My Father Built

My late father built these O scale cars from Walthers kits in the 1940’s. He was a W.W.II veteran and a mechanical engineer. At some time in the past they were stored in less than fevorable conditions, lost some paint, gained some rust, and lost some parts. The window strips have turned opaque over the years obscuring the interiors, nevertheless I have attempted to photograph the interior of the dining car which has individual booths. Kit building was really big in the 40’s as evidenced by the many ads for kits in the Model Railroader magazines of that era. He made up his own fictional railroad and added the decals in the 50’s. They are a little rough, but I hope you enjoy.

SCD…impressive to say the least. And irreplaceable keepsakes and heirlooms. Thank you for the pictures and the history.

Great memories!

I have a refer car similar to one of yours. I believe someone said it was from Walthers.

Yours are irreplaceable! Enjoy! Thank you for sharing.

SCD: My first train cars (HO) in the early '50s were all made from Varney kits. I can certainly appreciate the time that your father put into his hobby. He did a great job. Thanks for sharing.

Those are very nice and a great rememberance of your Dad. That dining car is great!

Kurt,

I believe you are right. It looks very much like my Dad’s refer. Probably the same kit. When I was a very small child I remember two Walther’s boxes that contained kits to be built. I don’t know what ever became of those kits but I would love to have them today.

Dad built a locomotive from the Lionel Hudson kit, painted it in Southern green, but he sold or traded it off in the early 70’s. That is the piece I really wish he had kept.

Best,

SCD

[tup]Cool, you should treat them as family treasures. Document the story behind them as well.[tup]

Neat - thanks for sharing with us!

What material are the cars made from?

I think it would really be cool to try and find some kits and put them together!

Jim

SCD - nice bit of history, thanks for sharing it with us!
