Some trees for Sweethome Alabama

After making a few random trees for Sweethome Alabama, a few of the guys on the Yahoo ‘Alabama Railroads’ group (Alrails) suggested that I needed plenty of ‘Southern pines’ on the layout, for it to really feel like Alabama. A quick Google search later and I had several photos of Southern yellow pines (Loblolly pine) and the ‘shortleaf pine’.

I gathered together some bits of sea foam and a box of WS ‘forest canopy’, chopped a few bits off and glued a few bits on, stuck some medium ground cover on, and ended up with these.

First trees on the layout

First Southern yellow pines

Although they’re a first attempt, they sort of look the part and I’m quite pleased with them, but I have now given myself the task of making about a hundred more for the layout. D’oh!

LOL - shrubbery done, there goes the chopping down of trees with a herring, eh?

Trees look good. I must admit that I had to go google “sea foam”.

Found a 2008 thread in these forums: http://cs.trains.com/trccs/forums/p/131885/1482469.aspx

Looks like Sea Foam three armatures is the same as the Scenic Express “Super Trees”, and that it originally is a plant (Teloxys aristata) from the Gobi desert of Mongolia that prefers cooler northern climates.

Those look nice, I’d plant them on my project without question.

Hopefully you enjoyed making those nice trees, & will be proud of the scene they will make (& the satisfaction that you did that & it was in the way you wanted them to be).

Thanks for sharing,

Great job shaping the armatures Jon. Very convincing. One thing you can do with pines, and I’m a little surpised that it works, is use static grass instead of ground foam for the needles. Those tiny static grass fibers end up looking surprisingly like needles. Its been awhile since I did one but I don’t think I used a GrasMaster, just sprinkled it on straight from the bottle.
