I knew the Empress was scheduled to arrive in Calgary from Lake Louise around 1:45pm that day and decided to hang out at the crossing to snag some footage. It’s too bad that my camera wasn’t HD though.
Got the chance to see a steam excursion pass through the area a number of years ago. Stopped at the station, grandchildren and hired hand got to see a real steam loco up close and personal.
That is really neat to see CP steam actually running. The only CP steam I have seen is #5433 sitting in Chapleau, Ontario and that was back in 1986. [:(]
Thankfully Canadian Pacific was feeling pretty generous last year and offered excursion runs to the general public with all proceeds going to the Children’s Wish Foundation. During late July and early August they had trips from Calgary to Brooks, Calgary to Lake Louise, Medicine Hat to Brooks, and a few other runs. The only thing with the trips was the simple fact they were all one-way, and you had to find your own tranportation back. Not a big deal at all.
I took the Calgary to Lake Louise run and it only cost me $50 for the train and $30 for the Greyhound back. Best $80 I have ever spent. I also filled a memory card or two with pictures and video.
That Sweet Heart was here in Regina, Saskatchewan last week for the sod turning at the new Transportation Hub west of the city.
Right now here in downtown the CP. handle about 40,000 containers a year. With this new one and the moving of their yards out there as well, they will be prepared to handle around 250,000 containers a year.
This will become a major distribution center for western Canada.
That was great, thanks for sharing it. I used to love to be at Ambleside in West Van when either the Royal Hudson or another BC Rail train went past. Now it’s all CN freight with no passenger service other than the Whistler Express excursion train.
I’m really glad that everyone has enjoyed my 2816 Empress vids, but you should check out this guy’s Youtube channel, he has some absolutely fantastic HD shots of this beautiful locomotive - http://www.youtube.com/user/CP2816HD
Wow! I really enjoyed those. Thanks for the link. Nothing like those hill climbs, and in my favourite part of the world no less. Did you see those Rapido coaches in behind? Just like on my layout, I need the engine though.[(-D]
A beautiful loco in an elegant scheme traveling through gorgeous scenery – it doesn’t get better than this. I liked the hill climbs too, and by the looks of the steam plume in the Lake Louise video, I think she was creating her own weather system. And fortunately they took the training wheels off so there wasn’t that big sore thumb ruining the shot. [swg]
