i don’t model them but i love WC engines. i plan on buying a couple for my mr. this coming year.
I will model WC. I just don’t have any engine. I do have them on my Christmas List.[:D][:)]
I have 6 WC and around 30 SOO. Wish I had a digital camera. What is your favorite SOO scheme? I like the hockey stick version myself.
Jim
I model the Milwaukee Road, but have a WC switcher (Athearn) on the layout in the yard. Not sure if there’s any pictures of it on our website http://www.railimages.com/gallery/peterjung .
Our layout is “finished”, and we’re planning on the final photo shoot tonight. I’ll be sure to put the WC switcher on the layout when we take pictures, so if you want to check back later in the week, it should be posted on the Railimages site.
I like the Maroon and gold, but would have to go with the first version of hockey stick, the swoosh you might say, where it curves down. The hockey stick is still better then candy apple by a long shot. What type of SOO and WC units do you have?
Alec
i have been wanting to ask this, what is SOO? i have tried to find the answer from available magazines to no avail.
thanks.
What good SOO or WC engines are available for not too much? I myself model freelance so anything goes, although primarily DMIR, and I may be repainting my GP30 into a SOO #700 scheme.
I LOVE the WC scheme. Unfortunately, I own none of their locos.
I’ve got a WC SW1500 on my layout, it works as the local grain elevator switcher. Don’t think I’ve got any shots of it though. I’ll have to remember to do that if I take some more pictures of the layout sometime. I’d like to pick myself up a WC SD45 too, but unforunately the funds aren’t there for it. Maybe I can find one that is a little less expensive off e-bay sometime.
And a SOO engine was my very first model engine. It was a Walthers GP9M. I’ve also obtained two SOO athearn GP38’s over time. One will eventually become WSOR 3805, but the other will remain in SOO line paint.

I’ll be modeling the Soo Line and my son is a C&NW fan.We are currently remodeling the basement, but will be starting construction of benchwork in February.I do have my eye on several SOO engines tho, including the Athearn GP35’s,Proto 2000 GP38-2’s and RS27’s.I wish Athearn would bring back the SOO SD40-2’s without dynamic brakes and original paint schemes(but no parallelogram logo[tdn]).I’ll be waiting until I get my tax refund to start purchasing engines. And before I forget,a model of SD9 2381 would be a nice touch as well.
Have a good one.

The SOO is the nickname for the SOO LINE railroad. It was originally called the Minneapolis, St. Paul & Sault Ste. Marie Railway. Created as a way to get the Minneapolis financed and milled grain from the Dakotas to the eastern markets without routing via Chicago and its tariffs. The route went through Michigan’s Upper Peninsula to Sault St. Marie Michigan and connected with the Canadian Pacific at Sault St. Marie Ontario. The CP took the grain to the eastern markets via Canada. The nickname for Sault St Marie is the SOO. The line to the SOO.
Jim
Max is that you! What are you talking about anyway!
James
IMHO, Soo’s early red-and-“white” is hard to beat. Got a soft spot for the re-lettered DSS&A scheme, too. (The same can also be said for the LS&I and C&NW, but I guess that should be for another thread!)
The WC maroon scheme will likely become (if it isn’t already) a classic, too.
Mick
I like E&LS also, the 3 orange and green engines are nice.
Jim
I posted a pic of our WC 1562 on our layout, http://www.railimages.com/gallery/peterjung
That’s the very same switcher model and number that I have on my layout! Kind of a weird coincidence, although it makes sense, as Athearn produced a lot of these models.
