SOO (CP) SD60's and SD60M's Paint

Why won’t Canadian Pacific paint their Soo SD60’s and SD60’s and many other locomotives still in Soo paint? They own so many of them. I haven’t seen any of those locos painted in CP colors yet. Why is this so? Are they planning to? If anyone has any photos of CP SD60’s that are painted in CP colors, i would be more than happy to see them. Thank you.

I think the reason for not painting them is CP does not plan on keeping them. They are just running around until they die. Kinda like the ex-WC SD45s on CN. They won’t repaint them but as soon as something major happens, they will be retired. Just a thought…don’t know if I’m right, but I took a guess.

You sound disappointed… That’s a good thing! Certainly breaks the monotony. The SOO was great.

Im not dissapointed. I love the Soo. However, I would love to see those engines in CP colors and see those engines live on

CP still uses the SOO reporting mark too.

I see a lot of covered hoppers that have the SOO reporting marks, yet they have the CP Beaver Crest on the side of car, the cars look like they’re pretty much new.

it would not be the same if the SOO SD60’s were repainted into CP

I still think they are bring painted the wrong color. They should be orange and black (hee hee).

CP is too busy repainting dozens and dozens of SD40s and other older CP paint schemes. The CP stuff gets the new paint first. I don’t think they plan to get rid of them either. They are short power, that is why they are leasing alot of CEFX AC4400’s.

SOO all the way. The CP still runs ALOT of SOO up here in Duluth,MN:)

I agree… [swg]

I’m actually surprised that CP doesn’t, at the very least, renumber them. Right now, it is possible (tho I’ve yet to see it happen) to have a train with two of the same number in the 60xx series – the SOO SD60s and CP SD40-2s.

Then again, with all the CSX and NS power I’ve been seeing lately, it may not even matter…

But I would like to see a 60 in the new paint!

Too busy repainting the dozens and dozens? They must be all held up in Canada cause I ain’t seein em.

For clarification, we use both -9’s and MAC90’s from CEFX.

The leased CEFX power that CP is using are blue AC4400’s (about 60 units)and purplish colored SD9043MAC (not sure how many, don’t see them too often), the only -9’s that are around are NS or CSX units and they can keep that crap out east.

Our AC4400’s aren’t dash 9’s? I thought that suffix applied to all the GE’s since dash 8’s? I guess you learn something everyday.

I see the last post was in 2005, so is there any new news on CP repainting the SD60M’s?

As far as I know, there are no plans to repaint the SD60s or SD60Ms. Heck, they still have those old GP40s and switchers in bandit paint that have outlasted the MILW/SOO and CP/SOO mergers! Unlike CN, CP seems to take their time repainting older engines. SOO is still considered a subsidiary of CP as far as I have heard. I say just leave the SD60s alone, they are fine they way they are!

The SOO SD60Ms have a statement below the cab windows that they are part of “CP Rail Systems” The standard cabs that I have pictures of lack this statment but I haven’t seen any real desire by CP to shelf or retire them, other than the ones sold to The Indiana Railroad of course.

I’ve actually got a picture I shot a week or so ago where they were using one of the Candy Apple SD60s, (6050 to be exact) as a yard switcher in Milwaukee, thought it was an interesting departure from the usual second-gen Geep.

Cheers!

CP returned the first order of SD60s about 2 years ago, the others should be up for return soon too. I expect they haven’t repainted anything because the units are leased, not purchased.

I spotted a couple ex-MILW MP15’s (pretty sure that’s what they were) working back-to-back in CP’s Shoreham Yard the other day. I saw them from Central Ave. while I was headed south to a Twins game (Twins 3 Indians 0).

CP has purchased all the remaining Soo Line SD60 and SD60M locomotives, the buyout on the first order was just too expensive. The delay in the Wisconsin Central sale meant that Soo Line had to accept more onerous terms on the first order when they set up the original lease agreement.

Oh, good to hear! I take back what I said.
