Has anyone ever tried the Sophisticated Finishes? If so any advice?
I really like the stuff. You can mix it 50/50 to make it last alittle bit longer. Mix it with distilled water. You might want to hit it with dullcote to stop the rusting effect or which ever finish you get. I say get it and try it out.
Yeah, I like it too. I’ve used Instant Rust.
One thing to watch for - they warn about short shelf-life once the product is opened.
This is my Moose Bay Bridge. You don’t have to rust it out as heavily as this, but you can:
Can you add any kind of color to the iron metallic surfacer? I just got this stuff so I’m in the trial and error phase.
where do you get this stuff? I like that look; could you use it to weather the sides of track?
I found it a Michaels, the craft store. I think Dick Blick art supplies also carries it.
You should be able to use it on the edges of your rails, but make sure to keep it off the tops. I’d do the outside of the rails only, because the rust can actually flake off and get on your wheel flanges.
If done correctly you can get some very good results.
If done incorrectly you’l get very poor results. Must people err by putting on way too much. A little goes a long way. Consider it another tool in the weathering bag of tricks. Experiment first to learn how to use this new tool.
Thanks for the input. That boxcar looks fantastic. Are all the rusting spots done with sophisticated finishes alone or a mix bag of tricks?
