I see no chance for a railroad crossing this mountain pass, unless one drills a four to six mile tunnel underneath.

Get the dynamite!!! LOL
Nice pic. pssssshshh 11,000 ft, that’s nothing compared to all the “niners” in my neck of the woods. j/k
Hey! It’s nearly 12,000 feet at this pass and the mountains around it are well over 13,000 feet. Foresters Pass to the south (left) is something like 13,200 feet, and with regret I don’t believe I’ll ever cross that, although having crossed at a lower elevation east of there.
Regardless, there’s no railroad passing over the Sierra Nevada range between Donner and Tehachapi passes despite separate plans to cross Sonora Pass or in the area of Mammoth Lake.

By the way, in my several crossings of the Sierras, I never saw evidence of the Alturas and Lone Pine Railroad. Do you suppose it was freelance?
Yes, it was very freelance! The creation of the late, great, Whit Towers. David
I think he was making a joke.

Looks like a job for a cog railway!![(-D]
If it was in Europe, there probably would be, if not to nearby University Peak.
