Sound board repair?

My MTH SW-2 sound just plain quit!! (PS I) Engine runs and lights work. I replaced the rechargeable battery with a new 9V - no luck. I see in the MTH parts catalog that an upper sound card is $100 and the lower is $60. Ouch! Does anyone trouble shoot and repair cards? I love this engine - super puller and great sound - is it history?

Thanks,

Cliff

Don’t know where you are located but if you don’t mind shipping it for evaluation and possibly a repair my preference is Mizzell Trains in Denver.

Have you tried a reset for the sounds? Checked the connections, possibly a solder joint came loose or possibly a pinched wire? Does this unit have the potentiometer for adjusting volume? If so adjust it up & down several times, stopping in the max volume position then back off the max stop just a tiny bit. Sometimes these get a little dirty or corroded causing erattic or no sounds.

If you are basically very happy with this engine it mite be cost effective to repair it versus buying a new one or upgrading to PS2. [2c]

Two Cents,

Thanks for the reply. Tried reset, no pot, checked solder joints. Good idea to have it evaluated for an estimate. It just might be something simple.

Thanks,

Cliff

Have you tried turning up the individual sounds on the engine and cycling the ‘ENG SND’ button on the DCS controller? I suspect (and hope) you just have a software issue rather then a board failure.

Good Luck…
