Sound Decoders

I have one of the original issue P2K Berks w/o sound. Which sound decoder would be best to install in this loco?

Sorry I don’t know. I would guess the Tsunami “heavy” steam.

I am posting because I found this back three pages with zero responses and thought it deserved a second chance to be on the first page for someone who knows to read and answer.

Tsunami works well, I’ve installed 3 of the heavy steam now. You should have enough room in the berk tender. I would advise a programmer with a computer interface and using decoder pro as this makes fine tuning the tsunami very easy. Look on the Soundtraxx website for info or email me if you want any links for JMRI and decoderpro

Could not agree more. I have installed sunami in a pocono 4-8-4. Two speakers, superb sound, but if you can wait there are more mfgs on the way so prices may drop.Good luck and isolate carefully or you will get a one time smoke effect!

Thanks for the suggestions fellas. I put a MRC steam decoder in it but the thing is awfull.

The Tsunami is the best available today for my money.

The whistle is not perfect for the NKP Bershire, but option #5 is a 6 chime USRA and is not too far off from the Lima versions of the NKP Bershires.

CV 115 needs a 5 for the USRA whistle.

heh, welcome to MRC. They are really the only DCC manufacturer who makes junk. Some are better than others but all are OK except them. I bought 2 MRC sound decoders before I knew better, and both of them, as well as all of the ones that anyone I know had, ran extremely HOT until they just quit working. They arent very good when they do work either.

I would use LokSound. It is the BEST sound decoder. Comes with a speaker attached, and a baffle. Way easier than a tsunami install.
