Sound in Proto S-1

Did someone install sound in a Proto S-1?

I would like to know wher you installed the decoder and the speaker.

Reinhard,

I haven’t but I know it is possible. Bruce Petrarca @ Litchfield Station has done it and had a tutorial about it, including pictures. The last time I checked with him, Bruce said that the particular sound decoder he used on that project was no longer being manufactured(?) and he wasn’t sure what it’s replacement was going to be.

A brief segment of time…

Okay, I just checked the web site and it looks like Bruce has the tutorial for the S1 sound install back up again. The DSD090 sound decoder he used has indeed been discontinued by Digitrax Soundtraxx. Even so, all the parts that you’ll need are conveniently listed on the left, with links on purchasing them from Litchfield. Hopefully Digitrax Soundtraxx will begin producing a replacement for it sometime soon. In the meantime, maybe you can find a DSD090 sound decoder collecting dust somewhere.

Reinhard, hope that helps…

Tom

Thank you it helps a lot as it gives me an idear where to place decoder and speaker. I will use the ESU Micro decoder and a small speaker that comes with the decoder.

Digitrax does NOT make that decoder. Soundtraxx does and I highly recommend not buying one (has issues).

A better bet would be the Digitrax SFX decoders. Downloadable and will fit no problem.

[D)] Momentary brain cramp. [:I] You’re right, David. Thanks for the correction.

Reinhard,

Check with Bruce to see if he thinks the Loksound decoder would actually fit in the S1.

David, you have a plethora of decoder install experiece. Besides the Digitrax decoder you recommended, do you think the a Loksound micro decoder would work for Reinhard?

Tom

It should. It will sound very nice with a larger speaker. Of course, there is always the ‘horn’ volume issue.

Also…the Digitrax SFX will fit just fine. You can locate the speaker up front or gut the cab.
