Has anyone put sound in an Athearn C44-9W ? If so, what decoder and speaker and how do you like the results ?
Yes I did. I used a Loksound 72466 but replaced the OEM speaker with the next smaller (.79"??) and enclosure. I like the sound. Clear, not too loud at it’s maximum setting and was programmable in case I wanted to change it. My next option was a Soundtraxx sound only decoder but those were harder to come across and still required a motor decoder. The fit of the smaller speaker is better and since I used an open rad grill assembly inplace of the stock, the sound gets out better.
Loksound is the best diesel decoder right now, so that would get my pick. If you install the speaker in the cab you will be able to fit a larger one, however it might be noticeable from the outside.
