Hello, after years of waiting to hear an AC6000 or 90MAC, i’ve still never caught one. i live in los angeles, so the big AC units are few and far between. even if i drive out to cajon, there’s still not a big chance i ever get to seeing or hearing one.
the closest i got were yard shots idling, and a couple descending cajon, but nothing ever loading up.
pleeease help me. a lot of my anxiety and anticipation for seeing a train is to hear/see/feel a big 6000 unit. especially a real 90 mac.
any videos or sound clips would be super appreciated. [:D]
If you can get up to the NYSSR and beware of the cops that make up their own laws[censored][censored][censored] But CSX uses pairs of AC6000s on some intermodals, at least for now. The fun may not last, however, so a trip to the old NYC east of Cleveland(Collinwood) to Selkirk might be in order. Just use extreme discretion in the NYSSR![:(]
yeah i think i caught a video of an ac60cw…it sounds a lot like the newer GEVO’s with their “chugging” correct??
so you’re saying the 90 MACs sound similar to that chugging? i know the H series EMD engines are 4 stroke, so it would dramatically change the tone compared to the rest of the 2 stroke EMD line up wouldnt it?
The difference is dramatic! I Think Cat’s new V16 for smaller naval ships is pretty close in more ways than one. Except it runs well on a consistent basis for days at a stretch. EMDs patience wore thin, but they may be close to getting it up to snuff!
I caught my first SD90MACH today - it does sound like a GE 7FDL16 (Dash 7- Dash 8- Dash 9 and the AC4xxx series) engine - but with a little more “girth”. When the train was entering the grade crossing, I saw the first two units (which were GE, one GEVO and one AC4400CW), heard the 3rd and thought it was GE too until I looked up and saw it was EMD(was staring at that shiny new GEVO). Never thought I’d see one of those beasts on the Phoenix line.
I’ve only seen the SD90 series and SD70ACe units in photos prior to today and to see one in person - those things are beasts. They’re among the larger units I’ve ever seen and the radiators are enormous.
