Sound systems

I am thinking of adding sound to my layout. I see that MRC produce a synchro sound box, one for steam and one for diesel. What is your experience of these? Is there another system that you know about and could recommend?
Any tips?

The above thread details some of my experience. Use a search of the forum and you can turn up a couple of other threads. Have fun! I do like the engine notching up in conjunction with the throttle increases. It’s a good value for the money.

IMO, if you are going to add sound to your layout, then DCC is the way to go. Not only do you get better loco performance (you can tune locos individually), but the “mass market” area in the hobby with regards to sound is in the DCC arena.

That means the richest features and most options will be if you do DCC and sound.

Here’s a demo video clip of DCC diesel sound (click to view video):

Thank you dragenrider, I have looked at your thread and searched on the forum, should have thought of that before. Thanks also to Joe Fugate, enjoyed the video it’s sound for me now. By the way Joe I discovered your web site earlier today and have added it to my favourites. There I found very much of interest. I marvelled at your scenic work and hope to use the tips and advice you provided.
