Sound Transit completes boring of second light rail tunnel
This tunnel boring method is a fascinating, exacting process. Two weeks ago, Port Authority of Allegheny County opened a new extension of its light rail line, the “T.” The project is known as the North Shore Connector, linking Pittsburgh’s existing downtown light rail subway to two new stations on the north side. The line uses twin bores to pass beneath the Allegheny River. A machine similar to that used in Seattle drove the bores as pre-cast concrete rings were locked in place behind it as it advanced. Each bore has a reverse curve at its center. The project has won a professional contractors association award for its precise alignments under the river and near to building foundations and other existing infrastructure.
Fantastic… now if only the area would get serious about services to the East, and extending light rail South to Tacoma… ASAP!
