Should tuning sounds down help a decoder run cooler or is it a futile compromise?I have TSU 750’s that run rather hot to my taste,should I go for another brand the next time or all N scale sound decoders run hot?
Tsu750s are known to get hot…hence the large heat sink attached to the decoder. Consider Loksound micro decoders…they dont get anywhere near as hot…
I agree with that. Being discussed quite a lot in the Yahoo SoundTraxx Group.
Few years ago I put LokSound Micros in a couple Bachmann 44 tonners that draw about 600 ma.at 12 vdc.
I run them at prototypical speed and no issues. That time the Micro was 500 ma max. The v3.5. Now the v4 are 750 ma I believe.
Some have reported turning down the sound helps. Many run DCC sound too loud anyway.

I’m one of those, turning the volume down kept the 750 from overheating and shutting down. Avoiding this model in the future.

You may want to use the NEW Econami. Smaller, rated at 1 amp and the heat problem is gone too.

An even simpler cure is to just lower your track voltage.

Easier said than done in some instances. Some don’t understand the electronics involved and some don’t read the system manual. Seen that more than once for the NCE Power Pro which has a control for track voltage.
The NCE Power Cab runs at 13.6 VAC, no adjustment, and is ok but I have over heated a 750 a couple times.

Just wondering how you mounted the TSU-750. Or is it just floating free.
I have always mounted the decoder to a flat surface and have not had any problems.
i have repaired many where the decoder would shut down after running for awhile. Found that the decoder was just floating, after mounting the decoder ithe shut down did not happen.
