Where is the best place to find DC sound unites for Loco’s,The only thing I’ve been able to find is sound for DCC at well over $150 At that cost I just as well by a new loco!! I know some one makes an onboard sound for DC,just can’t find them??

The BLI’s will run on DC (and I imagine any other QSI sound units). I have not paid over $150 for sound yet. I check specials, eBay and especially, Trainworld. But I do pay in the $100-150 range. It’s the price of sound.
Now sound has come down a lot. Soundtrax decoders can be installed in less expensive units. OF course, these are all DCC.
My Proto QSI sound unit runs on both DC and DCC.
I just ordered two Soundtraxx systems from this place. The prices are very good!

I don’t think that’s what he was asking for… Sound, has always been pricey… Sountraxx use to ( may still) make a sound system, one for diesel and one for steam that had a reciever and speaker in the loco as well as using a large external speaker for the bass frequencies. I think they actually recommened a subwoofer. The system also acted as a command throttle but only with one loco… This was before the DCC Really became popular and the systems (minus the bass speaker) were $350 each. You may be able to lay your hands on a PFM sound system that uses continuous cassette tapes to play sound through the rails being picked up by the loco. The recievers aren’t anything special, just electronic filters that seperate the AC carrier from the DC 12 volt to run your loco… I know lots of articles have been published in MR. So then all you have to find is a sound source. Then if you want command control of sorts for multiple trains with sound, seek out a Keller Onboard system… I think MRC makes a sound unit that is not onboard but will give you the woo-woo…
At the end of the day though, If you want sound, your best bet may Be DCC or one of the BLI options.
Good luck,
Jeff
Thanks Chip
Good info and thanks a lot all!!

Soundtraxx’s ‘Throttle Up’ series were $350 DC trottles with sound chips using the rails to send (analog) sound. It was an update of the old PFM sound system. It has been rumored for several year’s that Steve was going to re-run and update his DC only system with RF rather than IR, but nothing in production announced - yet.
Keep in mind these were hi-tech hi-end DC trottles with sound and $400+ (with RF) 15 years ago. The ONLY analog DC sound available today is QSI’s, which comes installed in certain seleted engine’s from Atlas, Proto 2000, and of course Broadway Ltd. To date, no one has offered a DC/DCC/ SOUND module separately - probably because of the retail trade’s required markup.
If one want’s ‘budget’ sound for DC, Atlas’ stand alone system is the only one providing it.
Please, he’s asking for a NON-DCC sound system.
Ram Track, http://www.ramrcandramtrack.com
makes a complete non-DCC onboard OR trackside sound ssytem for $39.95. But how good it is or isn’t, I have no idea because I have never seen or heard one.
Thanks a [:p][^]lot that is what I’am looking for, will try to order one soon! and let you know how it works[8D]
