I bought a PTB-100 programming booster to try and CURE the haunted Challenger and the BLI 1st Generation Hudson. ALMOST worked.
What worked:
Read the Challenger, set a 2 digit NOT 4 digit address, set the speed to hyper drive, ever see a challenger do a Wheelie!! Have to fix that.
The Hudson would NOT take a 4 digit address also. Speed was OK no dragster out of this one.
The ONLY cure for the Challenger is the same that is being done to the new Big Boy a new Soundtraxx decoder and speakers.

When you tried to change your Hudson to a 4-digit address, did you change CV29 also? If CV29 has a value lower than 32, add 32 to that value to tell the decoder that you want to use the long address.
Some DCC systems automatically compute the value that needs to be in CV29 when you go through the configuration settings, and some don’t.

Dummy on this end thought that Decoder Pro took care of that. Does on all other units except these 2.
Will try an ops mode , never did that before BUT will try. Here we go again OLD DOG, new TRICK!
This was an article about CV29 in the last issue of MRR. It was very informative and explained the problem that you are having.
