“NICTD then would retrofit five existing cars at a price tag of about $10 million.” $2 million per car to retrofit for bikes? What am I missing here? Are these going to be gold plated bike racks?
Humph. The old North Shore Line on occasion accepted bicycles accompanied by riders who were on the platforms of cars, and at one time there were combination cars on the South Shore, might it be time to think about the return of express messenger service on the interurbans?
$10 million to retrofit five cars to carry non-revenue bicycles? Sounds like vote buying, to me. BTW, I didn’t know that New York’s MTA, d.b.a. M-NR and LIRR and SIRR (the largest commuter railroad in the country) carried bicycles, free, or otherwise. I guess it would be somewhat okay if the rider sat in the saddle during the trip.
Well, now you know about MTA. The power of the Internet:
$5 for a lifetime permit on LIRR/MNR is nominal. And folding bikes ride free, no permit needed. Rush hour trains excluded.
