Why do we have to continue reading tirades about “socialism”? What, exactly, do the tiraders think caused the Pacific Electric to fail? It was the biggest socialist project in U.S. history: the building of roads, highways, and freeways for private autos.
Interesting in that this is a tax consuming project when there was once the Pacific Electric which was tax paying. More socialism till the money runs out.
In the first paragraph the Foothills Division is described as 11.5 miles and costing $1B. In the last paragraph the project is described as 24 miles and costing $2B. Which is it?
As someone old enough actually to have ridden on the PE (from El Monte to downtown) I do regret its demise, but then I’m also old enough to have watched the Super Chief sail through Monrovia and regretted the demise of the ATSF Los Angeles District tracks through Pasadena. I can only celebrate the restoration of the Monrovia depot and the Gold Line using the right of way of the former Santa Fe passenger mainline through the San Gabriel Valley.
