I am on my way to San Diego later this week. While my wife attends a seminar I have a full day to railfan. So armed with a rental car and maps, I am off, but to where. I want to make the best use of my time. I was thinking about going out I-8 toward AZ and picking up the old Sunset route. I have no idea about current traffic levels out there and don’t know the best spots to hit. So I need some suggestions. How about the Niland area, where it looks like a line plits off and goes down to Mexico. So what are the hotspots out there?
Well 2 years ago I followed the sunset route frpm LAX to Tuscon. Some places like from Colton to Indigo the tracks border the I. In the Salton sea area they are further away from the road. From Yuma to Tuscon in most places the tracks & the I are near each other. I saw many trains & just while waiting for the bullet train go by I saw 8 trains in about 6 hours @ Marana AZ. At one point the I & the tracks were real close & I paced a train as well[:o)][:p]
