I had some luck posting a few pictures over the weekend so I thought I would give you a peek at more.[:D]
I am currently deciding on how to layout the yard. The layout is mostly for train watching, but I hope I put enough into it to keep some operational interest. There is a three track stagging yard and the siddings will hold a double headed 14 car train. I limitted this as shorter trains make the main seem longer. The yard will keep one guy busy with interchange traffic and industries nearby. the one town to switch will be two or three simple siddings plus one long one for interchange duties. the summit will only be a passing track and the munchkins want it to have snow(maybe).
I figure a Sante Fe exiting staging into the yard could interchange there go back then later come out and interchange at the small town. I plan to have two passenger trains and a few dedicated and mixed freights running. I’ll need some help running things when it get s that far done.[:)][:p]
Would be nice if there were a round robin group in this area.
I live too far north to Round Robin with you (way up here in Carmichael, CA) but anyone who wants to do SP in their garage has my admiration. SP and Rio Grande are my two VERY favorite ‘fallen flags’ and my garage Yuba River Sub has plenty of action from both (all steam). What you’re planning so far sounds very cool–especially from a train-watcher’s viewpoint, and I hope you can find some other modelers in Riverside to connect with. Looks really GOOD, so far. Keep it up!

I’ve got three feet of SP right of way on the layout right now–unfortunately it is not physically connected to the rest of the layout! Once I get my SP interchange section done (representing the Front and X Street interchange with CCT/SN) we’ve got to set up some interchange traffic. While I model an SN subsidiary, I’ll always have a soft spot for the SP.
You know you could fit a compressed version of LA’s taylor yard on the layout. I don’t know much about riverside & san bernindo’s swith & yards staging yards.
mac 4884, I was originaly planning to model the east side of Colton but no matter how much compression/compromising I did I needed much more space.Colton would have been great but some day in the future I will model this. If you want a cool look at the yard try google earth and you will see. Trains exit the yard headed east and the westbound trains must use a balloon track to turn around, its cool to watch.Northbound go around the outside of the loop up and over the eastbound tracks and freeway. the eastbound cross an old up diamond that is still heavily trafficed but since the change of ownership its just different to me.
Spidge,
Again, looking pretty good!! Just a question though. What’s the brick building in your second picture? Is it a kit? Kitbash? Or scratchbuilt. I think I’d like a building like that on my layout.
cwclark, Yours looks pretty good too. I like that rotary snow plow.
SPIDGE…my man!!! Looks good, the lighting/valence is excellent. Very dramatic!!
And yeah, yards rule.
Worked the yard job on Don Bozeman’s Great Great Noethern last weekend at op session, very fun. I don’t have a yard per se on my layout, so I forgot about the fun too.
I’m currently living vicariously through you Southern Pacific (and others) modelers who’ve made the jump from the drawing board to laying down some track. My dream layout will have to wait a few years before it comes into existence but seeing everyone’s pictures are very inspiring.
