Maybe 4501 will visit during these trips.

Afraid not, but maybe next year in Chattanooga.

I believe the correct name of that railroad was “Norfolk & Southern” before it was acquired by the Southern Railway sometime around the 1970s, and not Norfolk Southern.

North Carolina Transportation Museum listed at charity search engine.

Mr. Rittle, it was Norfolk Southern, with no “the” in it.
I know it is confusing, because the name of the road after the N&W and SOU merged is the same.

The reason it is the same is that at the time of the merger they had an outside media firm do a study of proposed names. I don’t remember the number of proposed names but there was a story in the Southern employee’s magazine that listed some of the proposed names. In the end, Norfolk Southern was chosen because it combined the names of the two companies and by Southern’s previous purchase of NS, they retained rights to the old name and reporting marks.
