SOUTHERN RAILWAY Paint Scheme

Hope someone can help me here.

Southern’s paint schemes were beautiful, but I recall seeing pictures of modern Southern Railway locomotives during the 1970s & 80s in TWO paint schemes. These units were in the “Green & White” scheme and the “Black & White” scheme----- (Black or very dark Green, I’m not sure but I believe railfans refer to it as the “Tuxedo Scheme” ).

Did one scheme replace the other or was it based on locomotive type? It seemed that these schemes were around at the same time. I noticed that up until the end, the Southern Crescent E units stayed in the Green & White scheme.

I plan on having some Southern Railway units on my 1965-71 based HO Model Railroad which has a Seaboard Coast Line theme. I wanted to have some Southern units in the appropriate paint scheme. I especially liked the rather uncommon “High Nosed” versions of the EMD SD45 and SD40s .

I appreciate your help, [:)]

Thank you!
