Southside Chicago industrials

A couple of questions for the chicago folks:
Who serves Allied Metal on Canal St. and what do they bring in/ out?
What is the industry NS serves on the southside on the Pershing Industrial lead?
Ok last one; What customers are on the Central Illinois Railroad? Yes to the Limber outfit?; no to power plant?

Thanks in advance
Travis

I assume the Central Illinois is the line there on Cermak Aven. I went by there today and the power is tied up in a fenced in lot.

I talked to the crew of that local about a month ago. They said they have about 10 customers on line, I didnt ask, nor did they volunteer who they are. But, west of Ashland Ave there is a very big scrap metal company on the south side of Blue Island Ave that they serve. Also a couple of lumber yards in the area.

I am not sure of the NS customers down by Pershing nor who services Allied Metal.

Allied Metals is served by Canadian National. On Fridays about noon or so,you can see some street running in action. Just hang by Lawrence Fisheries and you can see a couple of CN/GTW units serving Allied Metals…

As far as Cermak Avenue, west of Halsted Avenue is served by Central Illinois. There are a couple of lumber yards and a HUGE scrap metal yard a couple blocks west of Ashland. You can see about 10-15 gondolas lined up. East of Halsted is abandoned, but it must have been a sight to see back in the day. Lots of street running and industrial spurs.

As far as Fisk power plant,it recieves coal by barge, but about 7-8 years ago,I remember the spur being active as it use to recieve transformers on flatcars…

Does anybody know when the trackage east of Halsted was declared abandoned?

Here’s a picture I had

Not the greatest quality, sorry

A side thought-
Who does the Central Illinois interchange with?

I will have to run down there and snoop around Allied next week. Maybe pickup some lunch in Chinatown while I am there.

Central Illinois would have a direct connection with BNSF at Corwith Yard, I think.

Those south side industrial areas are very fascinating. Another interesting spot is between Ashland and Damen at the Sun Times printing facility. A CN local deliveries box cars of paper from the west. There is a new produce distribution center there and you can park and walk around. The Chicago River winds thru the area. A HUGE old grain elevetor type building is there. Last spring I parked there and walked north along the river. Fascinating look at the city, with the scrap yard across the river and the city sky line further in the background.

Ah, Chicago!

The primary customer on the NS Pershing Industrial lead is a tank farm. I have seen the local at work there on Saturday afternoons. There is also another industry that appears to receive hoppers of granulated salt or some similar material, but I don’t know anything about that operation.

Oh Saturday action!
Hey this is the Pershing Industrial lead right?

I definately need to get down to the Sun-times area, I just started to explore the southside; I always find more place to go when I get home. These little pockets of Industry and railroads in the urban enviroment amaze me though.

If I am not mistaken, the hoppers are not granulated salt, but actually carry sugar and serves the factory that makes Wrigley’s chewing gum…If you are heading northbound on Ashland Avenue and you look towards the right, you may see a couple of hoppers being unloaded…

As far as the Central Illinois goes, does anybody know when they are doing their work. I’d like to come down and see them serve their customers…
