In some pics I’ve seen 4449’s number plates saying X-4449 and in some pics I saw X-844. I wonder why. [%-)]

What great pictures of both steam wonders…I wish we could have such entaintment here in Texas
Because when 844 was coupled to the train behind 4449, the train’s symbol is “X844” implying that 844 is road power and that 4449 is a “helper” per say. The same would be true in reverse order. Steam locomotives and some early diesels were required to display the train symbol on their numberboards. It’s an old steam era practice that was phased out once radio usage become wide spread. For the 844-4449 trip, it was most likely just for nostalga.
