SP & D&RGW question.

Hey all. I have been searching these forums and the internet for information on SP and D&RGW. Since I have no space available for anything other than a diorama style setup at this point (house in the future  ) I have elected to “get my homework done” in the realm of research.

I have decided to base my future layout in the Southwest US circa 1988-1996, just after the D&RGW aquisition of SP. I picked this because I grew up in Arizona and saw my fair share of SP locos. I am not a big fan of modeling steam, although after working on a Nuke Power pland for a decade, I have a serious respect for engineering behind Steam Locos! Thus I wanted something more modern. Add in the fact that I have a soft spot for the D&RGW coloring scheme and, voila, I made my timeframe choice 1988-1996. Additionally, I am electing to not model any UP as UP is overmodeled in my opinion :stuck_out_tongue:

I have gotten quite a bit of info on the subject thus far but am coming up short on finding a trackage map for the D&RGW/SP lines during this time frame. Now I know there are quite a few knowledgeable people floating around here, so here is my plea for assistance! Lastly, any tips/tricks/hints/resources one might have pertaining to my choice of roads, timeframe and geographic location, please feel free to post/pm or email me!

Thanks in advance!

I’m not sure if I understand your question. Is this what you are looking for?

Or maybe this?

Bingo. This is exactly the type of map I was talking about, but only in the 1988-1996 timeframe…

I am wondering if I might be better off by combining a pre-1988 SP map with a pre-1988 D&RGW map and then researching what routes were retired/decommissioned leading up to 1996… I was just hoping that there was a more exact map already in existence!

Those SPINS maps are a nice thing to have bookmarked though! Danke! BTW, forgive the ignorance, but is SPINS an acronym for something?

Looking at the SPINS maps, they are dated 1997, and I could probably extrapolate an updated map based on the data from the SPINS… hrm. Brain juices are flowing now

Southern Pacific Industrial Numbering System = SPINS.

A literal lexicon of info you all are  Thanks!

Thanks for the info! Good stuff there!

Outside of Athearn, Atlas, Kato… are there any other good N-scale Diesel Loco manufacturers that anyone would reccomend?

I do not model in N scale, but I do know that Intermountain makes Tunnel Motors.
