SP Orange County haulers in August 1986

Here are two shots taken about fifteen minutes and a few foot steps apart from each other.

First is of the northbound (railroad east) Anaheim Hauler with some of SP’s “pocket rocket” SD39s and Cadillac SD9s back in August of 1986. (Yes, that’s my car on the row there… and no, I wouldn’t do such a thing today… I think that may have been the day the mechanic told me that he had done the last overhaul the car was worth, although I did drive it cross country after that - limping the entire 3K miles, the car really was shot).

Second image is of the southbound Buena Park Hauler led by a GP9 (and also including SD9s and an SD39).

Wish it had been a sunny day… but sure glad I bothered to snap the shutter now. Twenty-four years later and none of this is possible to see (the Anaheim Hauler does still run, but with UP ACes, and I don’t think where I was standing for these shots is accessible).

Thanks for looking,

I would not have noticed the sky had you not wrote anything about it. The important thing is that there are Southern Pacific locomotives in the photographs. They look good to me.

Gotta love those SP headlights.
