The SP placed a box-type structure just forward of the fan and immediately aft of the exhaust port On their TS-11s. Can someone tell me the purpose of this structure. It is unique to SP RS-11s and can be seen on their equipment even after they went to other roads Like the California Western.
Espee’s Houston Shops was responsible for the design and application of these external intercoolers and improved turbos. SP chose to mount the intercooler pipes externally on the carbody in a very compact design that did not require significient sheet metal modifications or alterations to the existing long hood doors.

The ones on the side are air cooling pipes from the air compressor. Those are on both sides and not SP specific. I haven’t seen a good shot (like taken from a bridge) showing the box on top.
