Several forum members have mentioned that they wish BNSF would start a heritage locomotive paint scheme program. Where I live, we get to see most of that program as it is. In the last few months, I’ve seen BNSF units in Cascade green, Warbonnet, Bluejacket, Greinstein green and several flavors of pumpkin.
If you considered only post WWII diesel paint schemes, of the big 4 US rail systems, which one could produce the most authentic heritage paint schemes for their locomotives?
Offhand, I’d guess UP to have the least possibilites, and CSX to have the most?
I suspect CSX would have quite a few Heritage schemes they could use, Seaboard Air Line, Atlantic Coast Line, Richmond Fredericksburg and Potomac, Cheasapeake and Ohio, Baltimore and Ohio, to name a few.
But it’s not likely to happen, at least not anytime soon, CSX is “all business”, no “playtime” programs at all. But hey, it’s their road, they have to do what they think is right for them.
Well, a lot of railfans didn’t think a Norfolk-Southern steam program would ever return in any form, but it’s back, not like it was years ago, but it’s back just the same. If that was possible then anything was possible.
What it really depends on is who’s in charge. Wick Moorman at NS is a railfan, the gent who runs CSX (his name escapes me at this time) either isn’t, or is involved in so much damage repair from the years of neglect at CSX he can’t fool around with railfan wish list items. A good article in “Trains” several months ago told the whole sad story.
For now, if you want to see some CSX heritage paint jobs pick up some Lionel catalogs, they’re in there, and nice looking too!
