Spectrum G scale knuckle couplers

Ok it’s Christmas time and once again time to pull whats left of my hair out setting up the Blue Comet G scale around the tree. The optional knuckle couplers were installed when my wife bought this “thing” several years a go. for the life of me I can’t keep the cars coupled. It’s only a simple circle around the tree. I can run 100 car coal drags on my HO layout all day long but not with this thing. Does anyone have any experience or know anything about these couplers?

Hi…save yourself a lot of trouble and just tie 'em together from underneath (the couplers, that is) with a little wire or string or anything handy…nobody’ll notice what you’ve done and it’s only temporary for Christmas anyway.
