I just read in a Yahoo group the the new owner of NWSL is moving in the direction to produce new gears for the Spectrum Shay and then the Climax. The owner expects to rebuild and test a Shay in a couple weeks or so.
Go take a look. No mention of price. I have read Rants concerning both locos in different model railroad groups but contacting NWSL might accomplish better results. I would suggest anyone with either loco contact NWSL to let them know you are interested.
Not to get excited yet. This is really just an update and that hopefully in a couple of weeks they will try to isolate the problem and one found engineer a solution. It will be some time yet before it is known if there is an alternate source to remedy the Shay/Climax problem.
As I have three of these Shays I am hopeful they succeed in developing an alternate parts kit to fix these engines.
What gear problem and what model does this refer to? I have 5 of the Spectrum HO scale 3-truck Shay locomotives and have had absolutely no gear problems with any of them.
The old MDC Shay kit was another story altogether – it wouldn’t run reliably at all without a lot of regearing.
Yep. It’s the Bachmann Spectrum HO scale 3 truck Shay. I bought one at a show. When I got it home and tested it, one of the gears on the horizontal drive shaft was cracked, just like the gears on some of the Diesel locos have done. I sent it to Bachmann and they replaced the Loco. So far I haven’t had any more problems with the drive.
