speed steps

I am new to DCC and would like to know what is meant by speed steps like 14 28 and 128. Does it mean how fast the engine accelerates from throttle response? Thanks for your help. Dave

This means how many increments you will have to move your throttle to get from complete stop to full throttle, 14 means you will have to move your throttle 14 incremets to get your loco to full speed. 28 will be 28 increments etc. Hope this helps.

On most steam locos, 128 will give you additional speeds, and generally slower starts. Many, but not all, diesels change “gears” or notches at 11 point intervals at 128 steps - i.e. 11, 22,33, etc. Prototype diesels move in notches, so the DCC response is more realistic. I always use 128 steps, but that’s more a personal preference. Top speed is not affected, but I find that slower & smoother starts are easier with 128.[:)]
