[:I]Is there a spell check on here?
If there is, I haven’t noticed it.
Nope. You could type your posts in MS Word with spell check ON and then paste into the CTT Forum Reply window.
The new Google Toolbar for Microsoft Internet Explorer has a spell checker. It will not only do spell checking for this forum, but for almost anything else you ever type into a web page. In other words, it will check the spelling here and on any other forum for you.
You can find out more about it at:

While I misspell words now and then, I find I learn more if I look words up in a dictionary, rather than use spell check. I think it’s a matter of personal pride to “get it right”, and have edited my posts, at times, to do so. It saddens me that many young people just don’t seem to care. It’s easy to blame it on the “educational system”, but I think it’s more a result of being lazy, parents who don’t care, and the “computer age”. Joe
I’ve neber needed spelcheck. I was a speling champion in gramer school. A real cunning linguist. Never needed it.

Blimey, Joe, thats a bit harsh! I mean, look at all the other possibilities such as, for example, the horrible keyboard on this laptop which sticks and the vast majority of one finger typists and various other impediments. What I tend to do is use Wordpad and keep it open so I can write a reply without locking up the window, then cut and paste afterwards. However I never use a proper word processor because this old machine gets a bit slow online if its running a full featured program in the background and I’m on a dialup anyway. Really though, does it matter all that much if a fellows spelling is a bit rough? The information exchange and friendly communications is more important, in my opinion.
Agree with Joe; poor spelling is symptomatic of the general “dumbing down” of America. It all began with schools postulating, as Thor does, that somehow it’s more important to communicate the essence and to h*ll with the rules. After poor spelling comes sloppy grammar, and pretty soon everyone will be mumbling some variety of Ebonics and communication outside of the “hood” will be nonexistent. As prevalent and idiot proof as spell checkers are (dictionaries too), there is no excuse not to use them. I’m not talking about typos like “teh”, but common, simple words that everyone with a sixth grade education should know. If you are uneducated or stupid, then pardon my frankness and you are excused. The rest of you, don’t be so lazy!
My “machine” is 7 years old, I type with one finger, and I’m on dial-up. I also said I make mistakes, just like most. I should have been more specific about what makes me sad…it’s the postings that are almost incoherent. Joe

Joe, I couldn’t agree with you more. The more lax we are about our standards the less standard they become. I was at my son’s high school open house, and when I was visiting the English class the “instructor” indicated he did not count grammer or spelling as part of the criteria! I asked why, he indicated it took to much time to correct all those papers, and he was busy with teaching a 2nd language class at a jr. college!!
I drive my son nuts by requiring correct spelling and grammar as much as I can. Primarily, because if you don’t take pride in what you put your name on, where do you?
Spell Checkers are not the complete answer either:
Sum won tolled me wee wood knot knead two learn too spell because computers wood dew it four us. Eye disagree. Aye wonder, dew ewe agree two?
I wonder how many use the “Preview Reply” feature…? Might save you the embarrassment of some typos…
Ewer spell Czech is knot too bee trusted!
Signed,
A college Engli***eacher who most certainly DOES count grammar and spelling
Thee is an add in program called iespell if you are using internet explorer. Go to http://www.iespell.com/
“Thee”…duhh…Of course it only works if you use the silly thing.
But “thee” is properly spelled. However, it should be in the nominative case and should take a second-person singular verb. So the sentence should read, “Thou art an add in program…”
Sweet! [:D]
In a similar vein… has anybody (besides me) noticed this?: [#ditto]
Yes! [:D]
I wonder why they couldn’t spell it correctly. Maybe they ran out of paint for the sign. [;)]

correctomundo! yes, the information exchange and friendly communication is paramount here!
but,
just like a program running in the background (my subconscious), i will without thinking about it, and with no malice rate your abilities, usefulness, and value and place you in a certain order as to whether you’re going to be taken seriously, or not. i’m not a snob (ain’t that just what one would say), but that’s just how things are, and this is coming from a “c” student that couldn’t get past dumbell english.
that being said; please, please do not stop trying to communicate on these forums. i would rather wade through your eubonics than not hear from you at all! information exchange and friendly communication is the important part. your spelling will improve if you want it to; one word at a time.
just my opinion,
-rrick
