Hi,
I’m a UP fan… I would like to scratchbuild Sperry Flour Mill located at Ogden UT, a large concrete grain elevator well know to all UP fans (see the book “Ogden rails” by Don Strack…). It will be the focal point of my future industrial layout. As my goal is a prototypical reproduction, I’m looking for original scale drawings and floor plans and pictures as well. Anyone can help me?
Many Thanks
Alex
Alex, have you looked at Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps for Ogden? They will show the basic footprint of the mill and general layout of the buildings, etc. Maps for Utah may be available through the library in Odgen or Salt Lake City.
You might also check with the Ogden library and/or historical society to see if they have a file with photos.
Many Thanks for suggest. I’ll do that. Elevations will remain my problem…! I’m trying to calculate prototypical dimensions from pictures, but it’s not so easy…
Have you tried contacting the Utah State Railroad Museum? Lee Witten, the archivist, may have information. The USRRM is a much-overlooked source as a research location.
Contact Lee here: lee@theunionstation.org
Send him a query and he may find something you need. Or, if you plan on coming out to Utah sometime to see the real Sperry flour mill (yes it stll stands) then you can also visit the Weber State University Special Collections, which I know has a folder on this.
