Sperry Rail Service Inspection Car

Do anyone know if the major Railroads own their own SRS Cars or are they contracted out to do the work? If they own their own, how many does a railroad use over their system?

Larry

Union Pacific still owns a good number of rail flaw detector cars.

Santa Fe’s rail detector technology (ultrasonic) and cars were sold to Herzog.

Each railroad has a slightly different approach to detecting rail flaws.

Sperry uses magnetic detections primarilly.

All but a very few railroads contract out rail flaw detection to the Herzogs, Dapco’s and Sperry’s of the world.

CSX had some of its own rail detection hi-rail trucks in the past. Don’t know if they still do.

How many rail detectors does SRS have? I know they have ones that look like BUDD cars and I have seen them before. Is there just one or is there multiple ones. One was in town by me one week and heard that there was another in California the next.

They are ex-gas electric doodlebugs is all I know, don’t think any are double units. The most recent one I saw was the SRS 134. This one was named, I can’t remember the name though, anyone got pix?
