Spine cars

Does anybody know where I could find any spine cars or do anybody know if they will be produced in the future

Thanks Irvin

walthers makes them, look on thier website

I know athearn makes them. They probablry being found on horzions website or e-bay. if you can’t find anything try typing 'impack". they come in back of either two end or three intermediates. so youo will need to by two packs. They are less detailed than the walthers kits but are cheaper. There are two sets of Walthers kits on E-bay, one assembled with truck trailers, the other is unassembled.

Walthers offered a 5-unit articulated spine car in kit form that can handle up to 48ft containers or trailers - it seems to have been discontinued recently though some hobby stores (and ebay) may still have them. Athearn offered an Impack set that can handle up to 45ft trailers (not containers) - these came as a pack of end units and a pack of intermediate units as described above. Of the two, I feel the Walthers kit is better as it has diecast “spines” that add weight and is more versatile. The extra weight is handy if you plan to run the cars empty (as I did until I could afford a load)!

I’m going to borrow this thread to ask when the spine cars capable of carrying 53’ containers first appeared.

Athearn’s was based off of what was to be the commercial version of the original Santa Fe “10 Pack Fuel Foiler” cars and handled the at the time max 45’ trailers (only; no containers). Walthers was the 48’ model, just a little too soon - not too long after the 53 foot trailers and the 53’ spine cars to carry them followed, but nobody has yet to come out with it in HO, despite some rumblings (Detail Associates?).

I hope that someone brings out the 53’ spine cars. I have 3 of the 48’ sets and could use at least that many more. And the 89’ TOFC flats if WKW would like to re-run them…
Of course, they’ll probably do them in RTR and double the price.

Yup, no one has made a 53’ version yet. I would suspect Walthers and maybe even Bowser to do one. Time will tell.
