Spring 2005 Amtrak System Timetable Booklet.

I recently picket up a Amtrak Timetable book because Im planning a trip in a few weeks. Anyway I noticed in the front the President of the Railroad has a letter. It says that they are working on replacing over 183,000 ties and installing 88 miles of continuous wlded rail. They are also UNDERCUTTING 21 miles of track. WHAT IS UNDERCUTTING?

Also, what is the new station in ST.LOUIS???

Undercutting involves remove the old (and probably dirty!) ballast from a section of track and replacing it with new – which will drain better and hold the track more stably. Interesting machines to watch.

Mudchicken can give a better answer!

In some issue of TRAINS magazine they said a new station was erected in St. Louis. It looks just like the old one except it’s a little bigger. Really, it isn’t even very far from the old one!
