SPROG II DCC Programer?

Has anyone had any experience with the SPROG II DCC programmer? I like the idea of being able to program decoders via my PC using the Decoder Pro software. I’ve seen this done at my club using the club’s System One DCC which has a PC interface. Since my Prodigy Express doesn’t, I thought this may be a good alternative.

The Digitrax PR2 will do the same thing, and you don’t have to contend with converting U.S. dollars to British Pounds and running the risk of having to pay excessive postage.

There is a US contact, at least a web site for one, so I don’t think those things are an issue. I’m really temped by it, but I have not taken the jump, just yet.

Here is the site:

I did see the PR2 at Loy’s Toys’ website but my understanding of it is that you need a Digitrax system to use it. I’m running an MRC Prodigy Express on my layout. I also like the Decoder Pro software that can be used with the SPROG II which is another reason why I’m leaning that way.

according to SPROG’s website it works without any DCC system connected to it , one use the mention is being able to program loco’s at the computer when the computer isn’t near the layout . this would work well with your MRC DCC system or others with no computer interface

The PR2 is a stand-alone programmer that needs a computer and appropriate software, but it doesn’t need any DCC system to operate. In that way it is the same as the SPROG. Also, JMRI works with both devices.

However, there are a few basic differences between the two devices that you should be aware of before you decide which one best suits your needs. For example:

The PR2 can also load sounds onto Digitrax SFX decoders, but the SPROG cannot.

The SPROG can be used as a light-duty command station (ie, run DCC locos) when used with an appropriate power supply, but the PR2 cannot.

I would suggest that you go to the Web sites for both products, read the manuals for them, and become familiar with how they operate and what they can/can’t do. Then make your choice.
