Stainless ash tray question Need Help

I have a stainless steel ash tray that most likley bolted to a coach or trolley wall under the window and next to the seats and it tilts over so a porter could empty it. It is embosed with ETAT on it, Does anyone know what the letters stand for? I recall NYC had these bolted next to seats.

Thanks for any answers even guess’s

Don’t have any clues, but Etat means “state” in French. “State Railway”??

état is listed in the French Dictionary as state, government and condition. Beyond that I have no idea.

I suspect ETAT was a traction company.

Ok guys Did Canada have a state Railway??

Sure did, Canadian/Canadien National

I can’t be of any help, but now I really want to know what it means, Is it the name or initials of the company that made it??? Canadian National- was state contolled, Trans-Canada Air Lines- was state controlled, now the list will be pretty long if you want to know what the Government controls in Canada, try our health plan to start. does pouring billions into private companies count as state contolled??? ( the Government will look after us, NYUK ! NYUK !)
