Hello All,
I’m new to this group, my first post actually. I’m hoping that someone can help me. I’m building an all brass San Diegan, Overland F40, Soho Amfleet Cars and GEM Metroliner. But I need help. Most of the cars I’ve gotten have some tarnish on them, two is poorly clear coated. How can I make them “New” again?
What is safe to use to strip the cars?
What would you recommend to use for removing the tarnish?
And finally, what clear coat would you use before and after decaling? (I’m assuming Scale Coat?)
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. I’d love to get this project completed by the end of summer.
First off: [#welcome] to the forum! Good to have you aboard! [:)]
Secondly, you can use lacquer thinner or remover to remove any old protective coating before polishing. (This can be found at a your local hardware store or home improvement center. Be careful about odors and/or ventilation when stripping though. Actually, boiling water works quite well, too.
Thirdly, for polishing, products like Tarnex or Brasso should work fine for brass. Be careful using mechanical polishers or abasives on or near delicate parts.

P.S. Peter, not to be nitpicky but your term “Stainless Steel Brass” in the subject line would be a misnomer because they are two completely different materials and would never be used together. “Shiny Brass cars” would be more accurate.
