My goal is to scratchbuild a mostly faithful reproduction of John Allen’s 2-stall engine house that he built out of bristol board for 98 cents back in '48 which won him National recognition on his way to becoming ‘the wizard of monterey’.
Still trying to develop my knowledge and skills to the point where I am somewhat comfortable tackling that project … built a couple of bridges which was a good start but this is my 1st structure. Did a little research on construction techniques, etc. so the attached is somewhat ‘to code’ with cripples, fire breaks, etc.
Would appreciate any comments - negative or positive - on what you see ( in HO, by the way ).
The board above the wall is something I stumbled across for sanding things smooth - woman’s emory board for nails - works great !!!
Looks like a great start…Hope to see more…Cox 47
Looks like its coming along well. I’ve always found I get a larger sence of accomplishment from scratchbuilding.
I like the looks of it so far. Keep up the good work.

Very nice looking work, I like the stud work.
[#ditto] on the emery boards I’ve been buying packs of those for years, very handy and two sided coarse and fine.
Very very good start. I still haven’t sctrachbuilt anything too major to date. Keep up the great work.

You’re structure looks great. I especially like that you are also detailing the interior. Although the commercially available kits on the market are of excellent quality, I much prefer to scratchbuilding because I can build and design it MY WAY, have a unique model, and find it much easier than following someone elses incomprehensible or flawed instructions.
Oooops … when it finally came to assembling the roof, I found so many errors that I decided to scrap the project.
Like the RR philosopher once said … no scratchbuild is ever a complete disaster … it can always be used as a bad example !!!
Since it was my 1st structure, it was a learning experience and I learned a LOT !!!
Will visit my LHS today and git more wood !!!
I’m going to start the John Allen G&D 2-stall engine house … stay tuned
Good job from what I saw in your pics. I agree no scratchbuilt project
is ever a disaster. I have some structures that I built from DPM wall
units that once finished I wasn’t happy with so I took them apart and
did them again. The work was worth it. Keep up the good work and look
foward to seeing your progress. Bob
