A month or so back I was looking for advice on getting paint to stick to the slippery plastic used for sideframes and someone suggested the “soda blasting” technique.
That sounded so good I went right out and ordered up a air brush, compressor, and one of the Badger mini sand blaster sets. (Now I can start painting with an air brush too.)
Everything seems to work great. Just now did one side frame as a test. I just held the thing in my hand and blasted it toward a cardboard box outside on the deck. I just wore a plastic painting glove to hold and rotate the sideframe in my fingers to get an even effect. That seemed even easier than moving the airbrush/sandblaster around it.
The Badger Miniblaster seems to operate at 25 to 30 psi for technigue. I had hoped for a little more pressure. The compressor and airbrush can work at higher pressures it seems in my test.
I know some fellows have mentioned little rigs or jigs they have made to set out several sideframes at once for painting.
I would appreciate any tips on the types of gizmos or techniques anyone has for painting/detailing several sideframes etc. at once. I thought a little board with little screws and wingnuts to hold things down or something like that.
Anyway I’m open to all suggestions and tips from those of you into this technique. (I did mask the axle holes wash the thing up well afterward.)
The result of my first effort on a basic sideframe can be seen below on the left.
